I'm back!
Okay, so I lied, it wasn't a quick hiatus. However I am back into it now, and should start updating again. Read on for a bit more!
I have changed hosts now, to Textdrive. My previous host accused me of "overloading" their MySQL server with my 500 page views per day and suspended my account. It was a budget host, and I certainly got budget service. With Textdrive's new specials the basic shared hosting plan is only $8/mo which is basically the same as the crappy budget host who don't knw how to run a server.
On the work thing, I did a presentation to my team (of Lotus Notes developers) about modern web techniques (Prototype, AJAX, all the buzzwords) and Ruby on Rails. My manager was very interested in Rails - I did the 15 minute "let's build a blog" demo which was very well received. In particular the fact testing is part of the framework, migrations, deployments , etc.
The push at my work (a large insurance company) is for "Service Orientated Architecture". I raised the point that this means that the back-end insurance rating and policy writing stuff that needs to talk to a mainframe can still be in Java, exposed as web services and our front-end apps can be written in Rails.
My manager was very interested and at some point in the next few months I will be doing some "proof of concept" stuff at work.
The hard part would be convincing the senior management, who aren't so open to new things, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it!
So yeah, I've been playing with RJS and Migrations (which I couldn't use before because the craphost didn't provide shell access), and I still owe you all some more on testing.
Phew.. that was a long one!
