Quick Tip: Upgrading Frozen Rails

Another thing for me to do after my long hiatus with working with Rails was to upgrade the frozen Rails within my application to 1.1.4 (it was frozen at 1.0). It's not actually that hard, but the instructions in the release notes don't quite work. At least they didn't for me, maybe my install was broken.

The release notes say the following:

*  Update to Rails 1.1:
  gem install rails --include-dependencies
* Update JavaScripts for RJS:
  rake rails:update

Well, that's kinda true. I found it's true if you haven't frozen your Rails install. The process I followed to get everything working was:

Update your system's Rails to 1.1 as per the release notes (gem install rails --include-dependencies)
delete your vendor/rails directory and all sub-directories. This "un-freezes" your Rails
Update your application by running, from your application directory rails . - be careful you will be asked to overwrite some files! Don't overwrite any files you have customised, for example routes.rb, database.yml, anything else in config/, anything in app/. *Do* overwrite Rakefile, README, the files in public/javascripts/, the files in script.
There's no need to run rake rails:update because updating the app using rails . did that.
Test your application - run your test suite by running rake from the root (you DO have a test-suite, right?)
If everything works re-freeze Rails using rake freeze_gems.

You're done! Push your application up to your production server via whatever method you use.
